Thankfully I was working in Manhattan when it happened. Thankfully I decided against going home the night before, and opted for a commute that didn’t involve getting on the N train, where people were gassed and then sprayed with bullets and unimaginable fear. Thankfully I had a place to go that didn’t require me to travel back to Brooklyn after the literally insane events that unfolded in the New York City subway yesterday morning.

The tragedy where I live in Brooklyn has shaken me to my core. This has literally been an essential commute for me (as it has been for many people) for several years, and now it will never be the same.

My sister sent me a text last night, just to check in and see how I was feeling. Somewhere around two am I opened it and responded. Here is what was said:

From my sister, yesterday at 10:39 pm

So grateful you’re okay. How you feeling?

From me, today at 02:29 am

I feel many things. Most of all deeply disturbed + disadvantaged.

While I am grateful to be alive and to know that neither I nor anyone I know was present at the scene of the crime, I am incredibly saddened at the unfolding…
